The Government of Sri Lanka has introduced a new visa policy granting free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to short‑term visitors from 40 countries, effective 25 May 2026, according to the Department of Immigration & Emigration.
Under the initiative, eligible travelers can obtain a 30‑day tourist visa through the ETA system without paying processing fees. The program covers nationals from countries including Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among others. Holders of diplomatic, official, service, and ordinary passports from these states are all eligible.
Authorities clarified that while visa fees are waived, the ETA application remains mandatory for all foreign nationals prior to arrival. This requirement also applies to citizens of countries with reciprocal arrangements such as the Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore. Applications from these nations will also be processed free of charge.
The Department confirmed that travelers who submitted ETA applications before 25 May 2026 are not entitled to refunds. Under the current framework, tourists may stay in Sri Lanka for up to 30 days, with Maldivian nationals permitted stays of up to 90 days. The ETA also allows double‑entry access during its validity period.
Visitors wishing to remain beyond the permitted duration must apply for an extension visa and pay the applicable fee. Officials emphasized that apart from the waiver of processing charges, all other rules and regulations governing the ETA system remain unchanged.
The new policy is part of Sri Lanka’s broader effort to boost tourism, simplify entry procedures, and strengthen its appeal as a destination for international travelers.
